Moab Utah - Land Rover National Rally - Day 2

Day 2 of our Trip to Moab, Utah for the Land Rover National Rally. The rally hasn’t started yet (Check-in is this evening), but there are hundreds of Land Rover people milling about town, so I arranged to meet up with John & George from Chicago to take us to the Top Of The World trail in their LR3. Afterwards, we checked in on Adam Spiker who is staying at the posh & very pleasant Sorrel Canyon Ranch, base camp for the Land Rover Experience event in Moab every year…

Top of the World is an easy trail for experienced drivers. With a low rider like me, you had to pick your lines, but for the beefed up DII’s along with us, they pretty much yawned all the way through it. it’s 10 miles round trip of really rocky bumpy trail. It is physically very tiring, just because it’s so bumpy. But the views at the top are spectacular. I think we had the most fun on the last few miles of the dirt access road. We (okay, I) decided that we should run it as fast as we dared, and we dared pretty fast. Some fun corners to slide around at 60mph on the edge of a steep sandstone cliff

We concluded Top of the World with our first coating of Moab red dust, and then drove the 25 mile road back towards town. However, we stopped along the way to pay a visit to Adam and check out his highfalooting hotel/ranch. It was pretty nice, I must admit. The back deck right on the Colorado river was suitably serene.

Great site Nathan. I don’t remember exactly how I got to your site. It was from one of the Land Rover forums I believe. We just got our new LR3 and I was looking for a local group to go out with. SCLR may be a good place to start. I’m in the Pasadena area. Besides the LR3, I also noticed some other parallels…
My roommate in college (grad 1990) was a slope plane fanatic. I have fond memories of fiberglass and balsa dust everywhere in the apt. as well as the smell of resin and newly cut foam wing cores. Jeff’s first kit was a p51 mustang and he went on to start Vortech Models. He’s still a good friend whose real daytime job is in construction. I no longer fly, but have the itch no and then. I’m in architecture as well, though not formally trained in it. I’m a digital media director for small architecture firm in downtown la…RSA.
Well anyway, maybe we’ll cross paths at a SCLR event.

James, wow. Yeah, I know Jeff Fukushima via sloping at Cajon Pass. It truely is a small world.

Welcome to LR3 ownership. Please do join SCLR. I would appreciate it if you let them know you “discovered” SCLR through me (if that is actually the case). You will also want to become aquainted with http://www.disco3.co.uk website forum. It’s a great source of info on your truck, particularly for keeping up with TSB’s, tricks and hacks. It’s been a great help to me personally.

It’s Nov 4th (Saturday) and we can meet up in Pasadena and carvan up from there - It’s just a bit north east of Magic Mountain in Santa Clarita.
